GrainBound, located in Bethlehem, PA, was created as an evolution of its former company Material Complexions, Inc., which was founded in 2008 by the leading research team who transformed grain boundary design with their discovery of grain boundary complexions. Their goal was to implement their grain boundary expertise in real products, effectively transferring this new theory from academia to industrial production.
In 2017, the company was re-branded as GrainBound, Inc. to reflect a new materials diagnostics approach. Over the last decade, microstructural characterization has greatly advanced and created a "big data" problem. The technical team at GrainBound built a statistical algorithm to utilize this data effectively and correlate it with processing parameters and material performance. This approach allowed the team to take on larger projects and more quickly respond to companies. The company continues to bridge the gap between research discovery and manufacturing by implementing new big-data analytical tools and utilizing the state-of-the-art equipment at Lehigh University to solve complex processing issues.
Relationship to Lehigh University
The experts at GrainBound have a long-standing relationship with Lehigh University to provides them with access to the world-class electron microscopy suite. These multi-million dollar instruments (including one of the highest resolution transmission electron microscopes) provide a unique insight into material processes. Most significantly, this relationship allows the company to hire the best talent to use the equipment. Our company provides a way to access the university's resources easily for our customer's needs. We have an efficient process for establishing cooperative agreements to eliminate intellectual property conflicts.
